Crimes fall into two main categories: misdemeanors and felonies. A felony is an offense for which you can be sentenced to more than 12 months in custody. A felony is more serious than a misdemeanor and is punishable by imprisonment for one year to life, and in a few limited cases by death. Examples of felony crimes include:
If you believe that you are the victim of a felony, you should immediately call the police department in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred. All felony investigations in DeKalb County are handled by certified law enforcement officers who are trained to investigate, procure evidence and prosecute felony offenders. In addition to the DeKalb County Police Department, which has jurisdiction over crimes occurring in unincorporated parts of the county, there are numerous municipalities and agencies with their own police departments which investigate crimes that happen within their jurisdictions.
In some instances law enforcement officers may find it necessary to request a felony application hearing, after an investigation.
