Code enforcement violations are heard by judges of the Magistrate Court of DeKalb County. These offenses usually concern property and building code violations under the county code. Some common examples include building in disrepair, unregistered vehicle, open storage, weeds, as well as county fire code violations.
The Ordinance Division also hears multi-dwelling complex violations, often informally called apartment complex sweeps. These cases are frequently heard on Tuesday afternoons, and their purpose is to alleviate the difficulties faced by communities when apartment complexes fall into disrepair.
One thing to keep in mind is that compliance is the goal of this calendar. In general, the Magistrate Court is concerned with making sure any code violations are remedied. The judges who hear this calendar are primarily interested in learning that alleged violations are resolved.
